How Many Oxygen Absorbers for a 1 Quart Mylar Bag?

If you're storing dry goods in Mylar, the question always pops up sooner or later: how many oxygen absorbers do you actually need for a 1 quart Mylar bag?

For a 1 quart Mylar bag, use:

1 × 300cc oxygen absorber

This is the standard recommendation for most dry foods like rice, beans, pasta, flour, or dehydrated goods.

If you have too few, your food will spoil quicker than you expect. If you have too much... well, you’re just wasting money with no true benefit. Let's break it down simply so you can do it right the first time.

Quick Overview

Use 300cc of oxygen absorbers for a 1 quart Mylar bag. This is 1 × 300cc absorber or a combination of smaller ones totaling 300cc to ensure all oxygen is removed for safe storage.

A one-quart Mylar bag has an approximate volume of 1 liter but it doesn't equal an oxygen volume because not all of the content is air. When a 1 quart Mylar bag is filled with foodstuffs (e.g., rice, beans and flour), approximately 30-40% (the space that is not filled with food) will be air, and the balance will be 21% oxygen.
